Helen Keller National Center Lead Instructor of Assistive Technology in Port Washginton, New York

We currently have an exciting full time career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as Lead Instructor, Assistive Technology in our Community Services Program. The Lead Instructor is responsible for providing person-centered individualized evaluation and training in the area of adaptive technology for individuals who are DeafBlind. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Evaluate base level of ability to use adaptive technology such as computers, refreshable braille devices, magnification and enhancement software, screen readers, various communication and portable devices, various relay devices and software, and other related software applications.Make equipment recommendations (hardware and software) based on evaluation of participants’ skills and potentialPlan lessons and provide skills training in content areas of Adaptive Technology curriculum based on the findings of the evaluation and as determined by consumers’ personal needs and preferences, employing appropriate techniques, materials and communication preferences.Work collaboratively with the CSP team to design transdisciplinary training activities to meet participants’ training priorities related to personal, academic, and employment related technology use goals. Work collaboratively with the I Can Connect (ICC) NY program team to provide additional training on equipment provided through the ICC programWork collaboratively with the CSP employment services staff to provide technology training related to job seeking, job development, and, on site as needed, at participants’ workplaces. Research and stay current with new trends in technology and in the field of assistive technology for DeafBlind individuals. Participate regularly with HKNC Community of Practice (COP) including Technology Department, TRIC, CA-CSP and HKSB assistive technology staffSupport the training needs of participants receiving services from TRIC and the HKNC Technology Department as directed by immediate supervisor or Director of the Department. Maintains necessary written and electronic documentation regarding consumer progress, communicates regularly with Community Services Program colleagues, and completes required reports in a timely fashionPerforms additional related duties when necessary at the discretion of the Community Services Program Coordinator. Required: extensive local travel throughout Long Island, New York City, and lower Westchester. Meeting all job duties and responsibilities may require use of personal vehicle.REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education. Special Education, Education of the Blind/Visually impaired, Rehabilitation of the Blind/Visually impaired, computer science or related degree required plus 1 year experience providing technology training to Blind/Visually Impaired or DeafBlind individuals. Proficiency in American Sign Language and other methods of communication utilized by individuals who are DeafBlind required.
