CDL VAN DRIVER Job Location Riverfront Community Center - Senior and Community Services - Glastonbury, CT Position Type Part Time (0-19.5 hours) Salary Range $20.06 - $25.08 Hourly

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision of the Senior Center Program Supervisor, incumbent is responsible for the safe and timely driving of a vehicle to transport senior citizens and those with special needs to doctors appointments, special trips, and errands, and returns them to their homes; drives for other Town-sponsored programs such as Youth and Family Services and Park and Recreation programs. The schedule for this part-time role varies, with a maximum of 19.5 hours per week.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Drives vehicles to and from destinations in a safe manner, observing all traffic laws, and adjusting to road and weather conditions.

  1. Guards riders well-being while entering/exiting vehicle and while en route; reports problems to supervisor.
  2. Conducts basic vehicle maintenance tasks and safety checks prior to driving.
  3. Completes records of inspection, mileage, trip/cancellation count and hours.
  4. Reviews the daily schedule and plans best routes for the safe and efficient transportation of riders.
  5. Communicates via radio with office and other Dial-A-Ride drivers.

OTHER DUTIES:

  1. Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:

  • Knowledge of and considerable skill in the safe operation of buses, vans and cars
  • Knowledge of state traffic laws
  • Knowledge of typical destinations visited by special populations and best routes
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks and safety checks
  • Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, senior citizens, disabled persons and the general public
  • Considerable ability to make important driving decisions involving traffic and weather conditions

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to push/pull/lift objects of 25 pounds; ability to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to perform simple motor skills such as standing, walking, stooping, etc. Ability to perform moderately difficult manipulative skills such as driving
  • Ability to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as shifting gears on vehicle
  • Ability to see objects far away as in driving, ability to see objects closely as in reading a map or directions,
  • Ability to hear normal sounds with background noise, distinguish voice patterns and communicate with speech as in using a telephone or communication with the public, staff and/or volunteers
  • Ability to concentrate on moderate detail with frequent interruption

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of work experience driving the public in a similar setting

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:

  • Commercial Drivers License with passenger endorsement
