For a listing of our locations, please visit https://www.amwater.com/corp/About-Us/our-states-subsidaries. _ Primary Role_ This role is responsible for the development and implementation of American Water’s source water protection program strategy and risk mitigation plan. Provide Technical and Functional expertise between Corporate Engineering, Water Quality and Environmental Management Departments and across the States regarding Water Quality and Environmental issues related to Source Water Protection. Responsible to secure and maintain relationship with key stakeholders both internal and external, as it relates to the protection of our source water management. This role will also be responsible for strategic planning around Source Water to ensure that the program remains relevant and viable. _ Key Accountabilities_ * Lead a team of Program Managers of Source Water Protection. * Provide strategy and technical expertise to the business on Water Quality and Environmental issues as related to Source Water Protection. * Review and assess the probability, or likelihood, that particular chemicals, processes, or situations present a significant risk to human health and/or the environment. * Provide oversight for reviewing chemical toxicity, hazard assessment, pollution prevention and remediation plans. * Evaluate significance of hazards and determine proper disposal and management methods. * Oversee the design, plan, and perform engineering duties in the prevention, control and remediation of environmental health hazards utilizing various engineering disciplines. Work may include waste treatment, site remediation, or pollution control technology. * Collaborate with environmental scientists, planners, hazardous waste technicians, engineers and other specialists and experts in law and business regarding any environmental concerns. * Provide high level technical support for environmental remediation and litigation projects and monitor progress of environmental improvement programs. * Review publications and literature available and make associated recommendations on material safety data sheets (MSDS), spill contingency plans and other documents publicly available pertaining to operational effectiveness and environmental compliance. * Secure, maintain, and facilitate effective relationships with agencies and community organizations * Create, obtain, review and maintain plans, permits and standard operating procedures. * Provide coordination and support during Water Quality and Environmental emergencies as needed. * Must be able to recognize and protect sensitive information, maintaining confidentiality. _ Knowledge/Skills_ * Knowledge of science, theory and application of water/wastewater treatment and operations, water quality monitoring and quality assurance programs. * Expertise in toxicology-understanding harmful effects of chemicals on living organisms (determining the likelihood that harmful effects will occur under certain exposure circumstances, sometimes called “risk assessment.”). * Knowledge of water quality and environmental regulations affecting the business. * Strong process, project, and program management skills (e.g. budget management, organization, time management, attention to detail). * Excellent written and verbal communication skills (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations). * Effective people management skills (e.g., planning, organizing, recruiting, controlling, and leading individual staff and teams). * Effective interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting). * Leadership presence (e.g., ability to deal effectively and maintain collaborative relationships with Company senior management and other key stakeholders). * Flexibility to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity, and rapid change. * Must possess a high energy level, sense of urgency, decisiveness, and an ability to work well under pressure. * Must be able to work in an agile, fast paced, and dynamic environment and be comfortable with constant change. * Ability to interpret scientific reports and documents such as MSDS sheets and communicate technical information. _ Experience/Education_ * 15 + years’ experience required in environmental management, project planning, or comparable public programs. * 5 years’ experience in a leadership position with direct reports * Successful experience managing processes, technologies, and budgets. * Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering or equivalent, with specific chemical toxicity experience. * Master’s degree in related field a plus. _ Certifications & Licenses_ Water and Wastewater operator certification, and/or Environmental professional certifications strongly preferred. _ Work Environment_ * Normal office environment with occasional field work. * Hybrid working schedule (at least 3 days in office per week). _ Travel Requirements_ * Periodic travel in the US up to 20%. _ Competencies_ Prioritizes & Role Models Safety Self-Awareness Develops Talent Plans, Aligns, & Directs Drives Engagement Decision Quality * Join American Water...We Keep Life Flowing™ * American Water is firmly committed to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and prohibits employment discrimination for employees and applicants based on his or her age, race, color, pregnancy, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, marital status, citizenship, or because they are an individual with a disability, protected veteran or other status protected by federal, state, and local laws.
